How Do You Know You Are Making Disciples?

Most churches seem to know they could do a better job of making disciples if only they weren't so busy. They have good intentions but their focus on disciple-making has become hazy.

To know if you are making disciples it is important to know what to measure. An old axiom says what gets measured gets done. It means regular measurement and reporting clears the haze to keep you focused on what matters most. It is also a way to hold yourself and your leadership accountable for staying on track with the ultimate purpose always in mind. When that purpose is to make disciples who make disciples, these 6 key measures will help you stay focused and effective.

Six Key Measures for a Disciple-Making Church

HAVE A DESCRIPTION

AND A PROCESS

The church has a scalable and transferable process for moving individuals through the phases of discipleship and a description of a disciple at the end of each phase. The pastors are both disciples and disciplemakers.

EVANGELSIM AS A

WAY OF LIFE

The number of individuals won to Christ continually increases. The rate of conversion growth is between 5-10% yearly. Individuals sharing their faith is a way of life and not a program or event.

INTENTIONALITY

The percentage of the church that participates in intentional disciple-making structures increases each year until it is over 60%. Every church program incorporates at least one  element of disciple-making.

SPIRITUAL GROWTH

The percentage of the individuals growing from one disciple-making phase to the next increases each year until that rate is consistently over 25%.

LEADER DEVELOPMENT

AND RELEASE

The number of individuals that have spiritually matured to the point that they become inspired to coordinate/lead ministries inside of or outside of the church continues to grow year after year. Every leader has an apprentice and a mentor, including the pastor

MULTIPLICATION

Thriving disciple-making churches reproduce by coaching other churches to become effective at disciple-making or by planting new churches. "All teach though not all are teachers" applies to every spiritual adult as disciples become disciple-makers.
